What a Pain in the Ass This Was — But SO Worth It! 🎉
Getting this translation system working was one hell of a journey.
Here’s what I had to fight through:
The Struggle:
Docker networking issues between the LibreTranslate container and PHP on the host
OSSN’s action routing being super picky with AJAX calls
Debugging why curl worked in the terminal but not in PHP
Getting the component registration patterns just right
Menu items silently refusing to show up
Connection errors popping up everywhere
The Headaches:
“How can I curl from terminal but not from PHP?!”
“Why is this action not being found?!”
“Is it the Docker IP? Localhost? Port mapping?!”
And then… more testing… and more testing…
But here’s why I’m so hyped about this — because the result is AWESOME: ✨
✅ Complete Privacy
All translation data stays LOCAL on my server
No Google Translate profiling my users
No external APIs leaking content
100% GDPR compliant
Posts never leave JustBSocial.eu / nlsociaal.nl
✅ Unlimited & Free
No API usage costs
No rate limits
No subscriptions
I can translate as much as I (or users) want
✅ Self-Hosted Control
My server, my rules
No dependency on external providers
It keeps working even if Google/DeepL go down
The Trade-Off:
Sure, LibreTranslate isn’t as polished as DeepL or Google.
It struggles sometimes with:
idioms and expressions
context-specific meanings
certain language pairs
But honestly? For a privacy-focused social network, this is fantastic. 🚀
My users can now read content in their own language without me selling their data to Big Tech — and that’s exactly what JustBSocial.eu aims for:
“the honest alternative to Facebook.”
If someone absolutely needs perfect translation, they can always copy-paste elsewhere.
But for quick understanding? This is ethical, local, and good enough.
I did it! 🙌
Catha Wauw proficiat!!
