This week marks the start of the final school term of the year in Zimbabwe. This applies to Durlstone Primary School and Howgate Secondary School as well.
We are visiting again in October. We are packing slowly. We can each take two 23kg suitcases. We are managing to fill them up nicely!
At Durlstone, the headmaster retired earlier this year, and a change has also taken place at Howgate. The headmaster has been transferred to another school. So, things will be different at both schools.
At Howgate, the 4th-year students and teachers are also busy preparing for the exams. This is the second time. It is nerve-wracking. The exams begin in October. A number of students from last year are retaking exams in one or more subjects with the goal of still passing their O-level.
To put it bluntly, these students have had a lost year. The same applies to students who did pass but could not continue to A-level because there is no money. And little work. As a result, too many young people are sitting at home with nothing to do. I find that sad.
Over the past year, I have been in contact with a number of students and teachers. In doing so, we have kept somewhat up to date on each other's lives and what we have been through. I look forward to seeing and speaking to them in person again, and really seeing how they are doing.
