How do you explain to someone who doesn't know much about social media what Mastodon or the fediverse is?

Mum mainly scrolls through Facebook, X & Instagram & occasionally posts/shares things on Facebook.

I'm not very good at explaining things, so I thought someone on here might do a better job.
